Read the docs: searching never completes

Searching the documentation with readthedocs search feature in the navigation panel for any term redirects to a Searching... page that never completes.

there are a couple of suspicious errors in the javascript console:

theme_switcher.js?v=358d3910:13 Uncaught ReferenceError: $ is not defined
at theme_switcher.js?v=358d3910:13:1
(anonymous) @ theme_switcher.js?v=358d3910:13

installation.html:385 Uncaught ReferenceError: jQuery is not defined
at installation.html:385:7

so this is the likely issue which has been fixed in a newer version of sphinx_rtd_theme, just have to figure out how to deploy this on readthedocs.
