Whats new ?

  • Big news, thanks to Ben, we now have strikeout, fixed width, underline and a real coloured background highlight !
  • Official command line options and the ability to open a single stand alone note anywhere.
  • Tidier initial start-up ensures nothing happens until there really is a valid configuration in place.
  • Gnome 3 based Ubuntu now has an appropriate System Tray icon in place but I am afraid Fedora users must still use just the small "welcome" tomboy-ng window to the left.
  • An experimental RPM in our release kit for the first time.
  • Linux users will welcome the appearance of Copy on Selection, Middle Button Paste. And even Windows users can do this within a note now !
  • Linux and Mac users now have a man file.
  • Better reporting about any problems in the XML of a note.
  • Clearer reporting of whats happening during a sync.
  • The experimental Mac 64bit Cocoa based version has been left out this time, sorry but the 32bit is by far your best option.
  • A number of bug fixes, particularly during first startup to ensure no assumptions are made.

Installation
Please see the Installation Notes relating to Linux, Windows and the Mac at https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Tomboy/tomboy-ng/DownLoadInstall

Just want the libhunspell.dll ? Then download the windows 64bit package and discard (sob!) the tomboy-ng binary. Please note I don't provide and don't have a 32bit hunspell library.

Whats new ?

  • Printing
  • A number of copy and paste fixes, we can now copy and paste formated text and clipboard contents remain after application exists.
  • Export of RTF now handles UTF8 cleanly.
  • Fixes for problems that might show during Notebook selection and Sync.
  • An ugly fix for Gnome3 users (ie Ubuntu 18.04) which does not display the green tomboy-ng SystemTray menu icon. Start tomboy-ng with either -g or --gnome3 switch.
  • An experimental Mac 64bit Cocoa based version - see tomboy-ng wiki before using please.
  • A substantial code restructure and a number of minor fixes. Only apparent (to users) difference is a small startup screen noting configuration. On some platforms, that screen cannot be dismissed (that may change in the future).

V0.14 tomboy-ng Pre-release
Pre-release

Note the binaries have a slightly later date than the tagged source, that because they have been "re-released" to incorporate a fix for the Unix bug #40.

Changes since v0.13 -

  • A spell Checker - depends on Hunspell Library and Dictionaries, see wiki for important info about setting it up. Please see the gnome wiki https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Tomboy/tomboy-ng/DownLoadInstall
  • Export notes as plain text or RFT text.
  • A number of tweaks to improve responsiveness
    • We delay some housekeeping tasks (ie marking hyperlinks) while you are typing. Will need some tuning, feedback welcome.
    • Loading of larger notes now faster.
    • Searching through notes now faster.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts -
    • Find in Note - Ctrl-F
    • Find in all notes - Ctrl-Shift-F
    • New note - Ctrl-N
  • You can now select to do a case sensitive or insensitive search.
  • Mac users can now quit tomboy-ng using Command Q or the Application Menu "tomboy-ng".
  • A number of bug fixes including one for #27, ghost spaces and a windows UTF8 issue.

v0.13 tomboy-ng

v0.13 tomboy-ng Pre-release
Pre-release

Very shortly after the last release and thats because of valuable feedback from, particularly but not exclusively, Mac users. Changes -

  • Now a more compliant Mac application, not completely because we don't respond to Command Q by quitting. But we do have a nice main menu and the File Menu has a functioning "Quit, Close and go away" menu item. And, joy of joy, its now free of memory leaks. See below for details.
  • Possibly fixed a bug that seemed to occur when editing the title of a new note during its first save. Negative feedback very welcome.
  • Some changes to the UI during a sync, its now much easier for user to see whats happening. Sync is still a 'wordy' process, I show lots of info because lots can go wrong. I don't think it will but if it does, I want to hear about it please!

Linux The gz files will work on many Linux systems that have gtk available. The deb files include some icon and desktop files so are preferable for Debian, Ubuntu etc. 32 and 64 bit available. If you use the .gz files, you will need to restore the executable bit before using it, eg chmod u+x tomboy-ng

Windows users should download either the Win32 or Win64 zip files. No installer yet, just unzip and copy the single binary somewhere. Your desktop would be fine. You will need to reassure Windows that the binary is safe. I hope it is.

Mac users should download the dmg file, double click it and drag the (generic) icon into the Application icon. You can then close that window, unmount the install kit and even delete the dmg file if you like. Sorry about the icon, I'll try harder if you indicate the app is useful to you. Because I have not, as a developer (?) paid a fee to Apple, you will initially need to hold down the Control Key and click the icon rather than the familiar double click. You can then choose Open and get an option to run it. Note that when you start tomboy-ng on the Mac, you see a green Icon down on the plank, you no longer get a TrayIcon top right. Click the icon you do see and you get a tomboy-ng menu. To close the app, click File not the "tomboy-ng". That too might be fixed at some stage....

Please let me know what you find.

v0.12a - Jan 2018 release

Pre-release

This release represents a lot of bug fixing, a lot of work on stability and Support for Tomboy Notebooks including an option to allow a particular note to be a member of more than one Notebook. That option is risky if used with an existing Tomboy and untested with tomdroid.

Copy & Paste is now reliable and even uses the Mac's funny Command key.

It also features if thats the word, some changes that minimise the memory leak on the Mac (yes, its still there to some extent). The cost is that the list of recently used notes directly under the tray menu is not updated as often as you might expect, only when a new note enters the game. This is a Mac only issue !

Linux The gz files will work on many Linux systems that have gtk available. The deb files include some icon and desktop files so are preferable for Debian, Ubuntu etc.

Windows users should download either the Win32 or Win64 zip files. No installer yet, just unzip and copy the single binary somewhere. Your desktop would be fine. You will need to reassure Windows that the binary is safe. I hope it is.

v0.11 alpha release

v0.11 alpha release Pre-release
Pre-release

Welcome to Release v0.11a of tomboy-ng

Warning - The offered binaries here are somewhat later than the v0.11 code. So, if you want to build your own, grab the code from trunk, not here. Binary users can and should upgrade to these binaries, they will almost certainly have less bugs than what you may be using now.

Changes since 0.11

  • we now have some application icons.
  • rewrite of how bullets work, I think much more intuitive now.
  • fixes to sync engine, more tolerant when something unexpected happens !

For install instructions, please see https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Tomboy/tomboy-ng

Version 0.11

This release has concentrated on bug fixes and polishing. Its pretty stable, reasonably safe !

Two major bug fixes -

  • There was a problem with a note, once synced, then deleted was not being removed from the Sync Repo. Fixed.

  • If you applied certain formatting over text stating inside a Bullet List and ending up beyond that list, its was possible tomboy-ng would save the note using invalid xml. Issues #21, Fixed

Feature Changes

  • Code will now compile to 64bit Cocoa Application on a Mac. However, it does still have memory leaks.
  • The 'tables' used to display the list of note in various places now scroll smoothly.
  • Now easier to do initial config with the app making and using a Notes directory in a default place. You can still point it to an non standard existing directory if you wish.
  • Various small improvements to make things happen as expected.
  • Various small improvements to robustness.

Known Issues

  • Copy and paste are sometimes erratic the first time used. Issue #24
  • The way editing works around Bullets is not nice. For example, to turn off bullets from a block of text, you need to backspace at the end of the block, not the beginning.

We still lack lots of things such as -

  • Notebooks
  • Printing
  • Appropriate icons
  • Complete install packages
  • Fixed width fonts
  • We still have memory leaks on the Mac, minor on Carbon, be very carefull on Cocoa. Issue#17

Every new note is called "untitled note", you have to remember to change it. Annoying.

If you run it within the debugger, remember that there are several handled exceptions, the debugger insists on telling you about them so make sure you press "continue". Outside the debugger, you will not be aware of this happening.

Contributions are welcome as are suggestions on what needs to be a priority.

v0.1alpha

v0.1alpha Pre-release
Pre-release

This 'release' contains a lot of bug fixes (thanks to traumschule, bug finder extraordinary) from the November one. No major structural changes but it does now provide a means to make a default directory in which notes would ordinary be stored.

It is strongly recommend you look at the Tomboy wiki, especially the tomboy-ng part before downloading and installing.

Note we now have a simple deb for Debian based Linux users, a better Mac installer and the remained are now "ziped" for easy download.
