This guide introduces you to the Discourse Analysis Tool Suite and how to use its functionality.
Guiding the Workflow in DATS
This is the overview of all the projects you are part of. In this view, you can open a project to start working, create new projects or edit settings of your projects.

This is a complex view that allows you to modify your project in many ways. You can edit project details like name and description; import, upload and manage documents; add and remove users to your project to work collaboratively; and manage the codes and tags of your project. This view also allows you to delete your project.

This is a feature-rich view that allows you to do plenty of things, but its main purpose is to find interesting documents in your dataset, skim documents and categorize them by applying tags.
This view follows a filter paradigm: Almost every action will add an additional filter which reduces the found documents. The size of the current result set is displayed in the top right. There are multiple ways to filter documents: use the search bar at the top to filter by your own phrases; click on a tag of a document or in the list on the left side of the screen; click on any statistic in the bottom left of the screen.

This is a feature-rich view that allows you to annotate documents. Its main purpose is to do an in-depth, qualitative analysis of your documents of interest. The view is split into three parts: Document Explorer, Annotator that shows your document in annotation mode and Code Explorer (from left to right). Use the Document Explorer to find the document you want to annotate by its tags. You can create, edit and delete codes in the Code Explorer. Finally, you can mark interesting data in the annotation view by dragging your mouse.

The Discourse Analysis Tool Suite is a web application designed for qualitative research of digital discourse analysis. To deal with the multimodality and plurality of digital data, it enables work with different format such as text, audio and video as well as research with large data sets. The platform of the Tool Suite provides a working environment for data collection, analysis and interpretation. By enabling users shifting between digital automated functions and manual digital work, the Tool Suite bridges the gap between digital and manual approaches of discourse analysis. It is a project-centered tool that can also be used collaboratively. Especially since the Tool Suite wants to allow a comprehensible and transparent research process.
Depending on the methodological setting and theoretical approaches, different perspectives on certain phenomena can be adopted in the Tool Suite. The multimodal, (semi-)automated but also collaborative research opens the way for new questions. The first step in defining the research question is to create a project profile. Here you have the option to specify your research question in the project description as well as the chosen method(s) and material types. Nevertheless, the Tool Suite doesn't require a linear research process and the research question can be readjusted at any time throughout the review and analysis of the material.
